Koshi Province CM Karki pledges to secure vote of confidence

BIRATNAGAR: The newly-appointed Chief Minister of Koshi Province, Hikmat Kumar Karki, expressed his confidence in receiving a vote of confidence within the designated timeframe.

CM Karki, who was sworn in on Friday evening, asserted that his government anticipates securing the vote of confidence within 30 days, as both the public and political circles do not foresee the need for midterm elections.

He emphasized that the current provincial government’s progress hinges on obtaining the vote of confidence, presenting it as the only viable option.

Furthermore, CM Karki highlighted his commitment to garner support from various political parties in the Koshi Province Assembly, including the Nepali Congress, Maoist Centre, and others.

He even expressed his willingness to explore the formation of an all-party government.

Karki, serving as the leader of the CPN-UML parliamentary party in Koshi Province, has returned to the role of Chief Minister for his second term following a Supreme Court ruling. His appointment, carried out by Province Chief Parashuram Khapung, aligns with the Supreme Court’s directive issued on Thursday.

The court’s ruling mandated Province Chief Khapung to appoint Karki as the leader of the largest party in accordance with Article 168 (3) of the Constitution.

This directive came from a full bench of the Supreme Court, featuring Justices Sapana Malla Pradhan, Kumar Chudal, and Nahakul Subedi.

In the 93-member Koshi Province Assembly, the UML holds the largest representation with 40 members, including the deputy speaker.

The assembly comprises 29 MPs from the Nepali Congress, 13 from the Maoist Center, 6 from the Rastriya Prajatantra Party, 4 from the CPN-Unified Socialist Party, and 1 from the Janata Samajbadi Party.
