BIRATNAGAR: Indra Angbo, the leader of the parliamentary party of CPN-Maoist Center in Koshi Province, has made an assertion stating that only under Maoist leadership can the dissolution of the Provincial Assembly be averted.
Angbo’s statement comes in the wake of Chief Minister Hikmat Karki’s resignation, sparking concerns about the fate of the provincial assembly and the possibility of mid-term elections.
Angbo emphasized the necessity of a Maoist-led government in Koshi Province as the key to preserving the provincial assembly and preventing it from heading to mid-term elections.
He expressed doubts about the Nepali Congress party’s ability to secure the necessary majority, given their previous failures to obtain a vote of confidence.
Angbo pointed out, “Now that the NC can’t even claim the moral high ground. Once again, if the government is formed under their leadership, there is no basis for a majority, which would lead to dissolution.”
A consensus government is essential to save the state assembly, and this is only possible under the leadership of the Maoists, he stated.
According to Angbo, discussions have been held with other political parties, including CPN-UML and Rastriya Prajatantra Party, on this crucial issue.
He stressed the political importance of the Maoists gaining the trust and majority required for leadership.
Furthermore, Angbo urged a comprehensive assessment of the current state of the ruling coalition if UML were to take the lead, highlighting the need for a collaborative approach.
He stated, “Accepting the leadership of UML would require alliance-building once again. It’s not just a matter of what the Maoists want; it’s a matter of alliance.”
Article 168 (5) of the Constitution enables any member of the state assembly to claim government formation with a majority, Angbo asserts.
Previously, Uddhav Thapa, leader of the NC Parliamentary Party, failed to secure a vote of confidence despite being appointed Chief Minister twice.
Angbo noted that there has been positive dialogue among central leadership figures on this matter and that constructive discussions have taken place with the RPP to avoid resorting to mid-term elections, emphasizing the need for unity and collaboration in these critical times.
