Kathmandu Metropolis warns of fines up to 900 thousand rupees for polluting vehicles

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City is set to crack down on vehicles emitting excessive pollution and smoke, exceeding prescribed standards.

The metropolis has issued an official notice, outlining that vehicle owners responsible for pollution levels above the standards will face fines of up to 300 thousand rupees.

Additionally, they will be required to bring their vehicles into compliance within a two-month period. The notification specifies that if the prescribed actions are not taken within the stipulated time frame, the fine will triple, amounting to 900 thousand rupees.

Furthermore, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City has pledged to conduct regular air pollution inspections on vehicles passing through its jurisdiction. Currently, numerous public complaints have arisen regarding smoke emissions exceeding government-set standards. There is also widespread concern about the poor air quality resulting from vehicles operating on the roads. Consequently, the metropolis has initiated a strict enforcement campaign.
