Koshi  CM Karki resigns amid political uncertainty

BIRATNAGAR: Chief Minister of Koshi Province, Hikmat Kumar Karki, has tendered his resignation today.

During today’s meeting of the Koshi Province Assembly, CM Karki announced his decision to step down.

This move comes after he had submitted a vote of confidence proposal to the Koshi Province Assembly secretariat on October 4, following Article 168 (3) of the constitution.

However, realizing the lack of support for his vote of confidence in today’s assembly meeting, CM Karki opted to resign from his position.

He reiterated the CPN-UML’s commitment to upholding the constitution’s supremacy and explained that he resigned because the people of Koshi Province expressed a preference against holding elections.

Karki emphasized that, given the current complexities, mid-term elections in the province seem inevitable. He stressed the need for consensus, cooperation, and unity among political parties to avoid mid-term elections and form a stable government.

He further highlighted that establishing a consensus government represents the best alternative, as none of the political parties in the Koshi Province Assembly commands a clear majority.

Karki had taken the oath of office and secrecy on September 8.

The Koshi Province Assembly comprises 29 members from the Nepali Congress, 40 from the UML, including the Deputy-Speaker, 13 from the CPN-Maoist Center, four from CPN-Unified Socialist, six from Rastriya Prajatantra Party, and one from Janata Samajwadi Party.
