UML eliminates age restriction allowing Chairman Oli to pursue another term

KATHMANDU: The CPN-UML party has taken the step of removing the age limit of 70 years for executive committees, thereby clearing the path for 71-year-old Chairman KP Oli to potentially serve another term if he chooses to do so.

During the secretariat meeting held on June 2, the party made the decision to eliminate the age limit that was previously established in the statute convention held during the 10th General Convention.

According to Article 64 of the party’s statute, any leader elected or nominated as a member or office-bearer of executive committees should not have surpassed the age of 70. Nevertheless, the provision allowed leaders who were elected or nominated before reaching the age of 70 to serve their term even if they crossed that threshold.

The age limit has now been removed, and it has been decided to present the proposal to the statute general convention for approval, as stated by a UML leader.

The leader claimed that the age restriction was lifted for Mukunda Neupane, who recently rejoined the party after being associated with the CPN (Unified Socialist) formed following a split in the UML.

However, this provision also removes the age restriction for 71-year-old Oli and Senior Vice-chairman Ishwar Pokharel, who will turn 70 in March 2024
