Jajarkot continues to shake: 175 aftershocks following Friday’s powerful earthquake



JAJARKOT: Jajarkot, which has been devastated by a powerful earthquake, is continuously experiencing small and large aftershocks.

According to the National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center, the 6.4-magnitude earthquake hit at 11:47 pm last night. The earthquake, which passed through Barekot Rural Municipality-1 Ramidanda of Jajarkot, has caused a significant loss of human lives.

157 people have died, and 202 people were injured in the earthquake. 105 people died in Jajarkot, and 52 in Rukum West. Similarly, 105 people were injured in Jajarkot, 85 in Rukum West, three in Dailekh, three in Baitadi, five in Jumla, and one in Rolpa. Some of them are in critical condition.

The National Earthquake Monitoring and Research Center has reported that small-scale aftershocks have been occurring since then. According to the center’s data, 175 minor aftershocks were recorded from 14:47 last night to this afternoon.

Five of them recorded aftershocks with a magnitude greater than four. The last aftershock occurred at 3:40 pm with a magnitude of 4.2.

Even after the powerful earthquake occurred on the night of October 17th, there were three consecutive aftershocks of more than four magnitudes. A 4.5 aftershock occurred at 12:08 pm, 4.2 at 12:29 pm, and 4.3 at 12:35 pm.

Then, there was an aftershock of 4.6 magnitudes at 4:16 am on October 18th. Since then, there have been continuous small aftershocks, the center said. Small aftershocks did not affect much. However, local residents are becoming alarmed.

Geologists have been predicting that a major earthquake may occur in western Nepal. In the last 500 years, there has been no major earthquake in western Nepal. This is the biggest earthquake since the powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake in 2015.”
