KATHMANDU: Former Chief Justice (CJ) Kalyan Shrestha emphasized the imperative of swift action, regardless of any pretext, to bring the peace process to its completion.
Addressing a program focused on transitional justice in New Baneshwar, Kathmandu on Monday, former Chief Justice Shrestha articulated the need for Nepal to transform from a conflict-affected nation to a beacon of peace on the global stage.
During the event, he pointed out the contradiction where Nepal is recognized as a peaceful nation internationally but is simultaneously depicted as conflict-affected on the world map.
Expressing his optimism about the current government’s potential to finalize the peace process, he empathized with the long wait endured by the victims for justice and firmly believed that their grievances could be resolved.
Dismissing the notion that victims must endure injustice to achieve peace, he advocated for a solution rooted in justice.
“We are on the journey towards achieving enduring peace, with justice serving as its foundation. Without justice, the prospect of peace remains unattainable,” he emphasized.
“It is imperative that we expedite the resolution of transitional justice without delay,” he added.
Highlighting the importance of ensuring the widespread acceptance of the bill currently under consideration in the House, former CJ Shrestha urged all parties to demonstrate a spirit of cooperation in order to successfully conclude the transitional justice process.
He lamented the fact that, despite the formulation of a new constitution and efforts to integrate former combatants into the armed forces and society, justice has remained elusive for an extended period after the armed conflict.
