KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called upon the government and other relevant authorities to prioritize the creation of environments conducive to persons with disabilities.
Marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the commission issued a statement on Sunday, emphasizing the need for concerted efforts in this direction.
Annually, December 3rd commemorates the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. This year, Nepal observes the 32nd iteration under the theme ‘Commitment to Achieving Sustainable Development Goals: Solidarity with the Inclusion and Leadership of Persons with Disabilities’.
As a signatory to the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2006), Nepal is obligated to uphold the rights of individuals with disabilities, as delineated in the nation’s constitution, the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act of 2074, and other pertinent legislation and policies.
Dr. Tikaram Pokharel, the Commission’s spokesperson, underscored, “The Commission urges federal, provincial, and local governments, emphasizing the imperative to address issues pertaining to the human rights of persons with disabilities.”
The statement also recalled previous recommendations made by the Commission and expressed confidence that these suggestions would be diligently executed by all pertinent agencies, including the Government of Nepal.
