Production of Bhadaiya rice to decline following long drought

KATHMANDU: The farmers here are not able to plant Bhadaiya rice due to a long drought, which will cause a decline in its production.

Crop Conservation Officer at Agriculture Knowledge Centre in Bara, Raj Narayan Prasad, said the farmers had set the target to plant different varieties of Bhadaiya rice in 11,905 hectares of land in the fiscal year 2080/81. But, only 10 percent plantation is over till date because of a long drought.

Although the area for planting the seedlings of Bhadaiya rice has decreased, the area for the planting of Agahani rice would be increased this year, he added.

Similarly, the Chief of Agriculture Knowledge Centre, Jitendra Yadav, mentioned that the farmers had planted different varieties of Bhadaiya rice in 11,905 hectares of land last year, which yielded 4.3 percent per hectare.

A farmer Gopal Das Bairagi of Kalaiya Sub-Metropolis-14 said they were in a problem after not being able to plant rice seedlings following a scant rainfall.
