Joint bench of Justices Shrestha and Chudal to hear writ against IGP appointment today

KATHMANDU: A joint bench of Justices Bishowambhar Shrestha and Kumar Chudal is hearing the writ petition on controversy surrounding the IGP appointment today.

AIG Bishwaraj Pokharel had moved the SC challenging the government’s decision alleging that an officer junior to him was promoted as IGP breaching the Nepal Police Act and existing regulations.

Pokharel had been promoted to the post of AIG 16 months before Dhiraj Pratap Singh.

A Cabinet meeting on May 1 had decided to appoint Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Dhiraj Pratap Singh as the Inspector General of Nepal Police.

Although the Ministry of Home Affairs had recommended AIG Pokharel to the post, the Cabinet decided to appoint Singh to the coveted post.

Earlier, Justice Sushmalatha Mathema had fixed the date of the final hearing for today without issuing the interim order.

If the bench of Justices Shrestha and Chudal upholds Pokhrel’s demand today, Pokhrel will become the IGP.
