Around 8,000 candidates withdraw nominations in local election



KATHMANDU: The Election Commission (EC) has stated that about 8,000 candidates have withdrawn their candidacies in the local level elections.

EC Spokesperson Shaligram Sharma Poudel said that out of 153,000 candidates, about 8,000 had withdrawn their candidacies.

“The number of people withdrawing their candidacies stands around 8,000. One lakh 53 thousand candidates were fielded for the election but about 8,000 candidates withdrew nominations. Now, around 145,000 candidates will contest the local election,” he said.

The EC provided election symbols to all the registered candidates on Saturday.

The EC had scrutinized the nomination papers and looked into complaints filed against them before publishing the final list of the candidates on Friday.
