SC not adamant on restricting Nijgadh International Airport

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has left the way open for the continuation of the construction of an international airport in Nijgadh, Bara.

Announcing the final written decision on Nijgadh International Airport, the Supreme Court on Wednesday revealed that it did not prohibit the construction of Nijgadh International Airport.

Although three out of five judges of the bench suggested finding a technically, environmentally, and financially suitable alternative to the Nijgadh airport, the decision did not urge to stop the construction of the airport there. Rather, the apex court urged to ensure the environmental impact assessment (EIA) prior to constructing the airport there.

The full bench comprising five justices Bishwambhar Shrestha, Ishwar Khatiwada, Prakash Man Singh Raut, Hari Krishna Karki and Manoj Kumar Sharma was divided in their opinion about the construction of the Nijgadh airport.

Justices Shrestha, Khatiwada and Raut were of the opinion that an alternative should be sought; however, justices Karki and Sharma were of the opinion that an alternative to the proposed airport should still be an airport in Nijgadh.
