Red panda conservationist Lama wins Whitley Award 2022



KATHMANDU: Red panda conservationist Sonam Lama of Taplejung has received the world-renowned Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN) award.

The award worth 40,000 British sterling pounds (about 6.2 million Nepali rupees) was presented to Lama at a ceremony in London on Wednesday.

In the presence of WFN Patron Sir David Attenborough, British Princess Anne presented the award to Lama.

Five other conservationists also received the award.

“Being a Whitley Award winner is the greatest achievement of my conservation career,” Lama said after receiving the in London on Wednesday award.

Whitley Fund for Nature (WFN) is a UK fundraising and grant-giving charity, which supports conservation leaders working in their home countries across the Global South. Over 29 years, it has channeled £19 million to more than 200 conservationists in 80 countries.

Each year a Whitley Award alumnus is chosen to receive the Whitley Gold Award in recognition of their outstanding contribution to conservation.
