KATHMANDU: CPN-Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has said that the country has survived an accident with the parliamentary ratification of Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC).
Speaking at a press conference in Khulmatar on Monday, Prachanda said that he had agreed to pass MCC after sensing that the peace process, constitution and democracy were at stake. He said that with MCC’s ratification, the coalition and the government both were intact and now the government’s focus would be on successful completion of elections.
The Maoist chair also expressed happiness over the approval of the MCC along with the explanatory notes by the Parliament.
He also accused the then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli of blocking his move to pass MCC as a resolution from the parliament when his and Oli’s party merged and led the government. Though everyone was happy when the United States announced to sign MCC with Nepal, he viewed that many issues arising after the formation of the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) affected the US grant agreement.
Prachanda claimed that the explanatory notes passed by the parliament would be part of the MCC in accordance with international law. He said that MCC was unlike the resolution on Mahakali treaty in the past.
He added that the US Embassy in Kathmandu sent positive signals regarding the explanatory notes. He also said that the MCC would invalidate if the United States did not accept the explanatory notes.
He alleged some leaders of the party were protesting against MCC in a bid to collect the sympathy of the people.
