Independent candidate Balen Shah elected KMC mayor, UML’s Sunita Dangol deputy mayor

Independent candidate Balen Shah has been elected as the mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City while Sunita Dangol of CPN-UML has won the post of deputy mayor.

According to the Election Commission, the counting of votes was completed on Thursday but the final results are being announced only on Friday morning.

According to the final results, Balen Sah got 61,767 votes while his nearest rival Sirjana Singh of Nepali Congress got 38,341 votes. Similarly, CPN-UML candidate Keshav Sthapit got 38,117 votes.

UML’s Sunita Dangol defeated CPN (Unified Socialist)’s Rameshwar Shrestha by a huge margin. She got 68, 612 votes while Shrestha got 23,806 votes.

NA endorses policies and programs

A meeting of the National Assembly (NA) on Friday passed the Policies and Programs of the Government by majority.

NA Chair Ganesh Prasad Timilsina had presented the government’s policy document for the fiscal year 2022/23 for a decision.

Before the endorsement of the policies and programs, Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary affairs Govinda Prasad Sharma Koirala, on behalf of Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba, replied to the questions raised in course of the deliberations on the policy document.

Fuel price hike due to international causes: Supplies Minister Badu

The government has said the domestic rise in the price of petroleum products is for the same reason as in the international market as the fallout of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Stating that the government-owned Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) has been buying fuel as per the agreement reached between Nepal and India, Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Dilendra Prasad Badu said petroleum products worth more than Rs 100 billion have been imported in the 10 months of the current fiscal year as compared to the last fiscal year.

Taking time from the Speaker at the outset of the House of Representatives meeting Friday, he informed the parliament that 2.38 billion liters petroleum products and 68 metric tons cooking gas has been purchased in the ten months of the current fiscal year, 2021/22.

He said the meeting of the Council of Ministers on May 24 decided to adjust the tax and a proposal to this effect was under consideration at the Ministry of Finance.

Nepali society turning away from ideology, faith: Prachanda

CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has said Nepali society is deviating from ideology and faith.

Addressing an interaction and award ceremony jointly organized by Press Center Nepal and Jana Sanskritik Mahasangh Nepal in Kathmandu on the occasion of the 20th Memorial Day of Martyr Krishna Sen Ichchhuk on Friday, Chair Prachanda said the society was moving towards deviation.

He said that Nepali society was not moving forward based on ideology and faith. He added unhealthy competition in the society had increased for momentary, personal interests, among others.

He stressed focusing on new types of research, inventions and activisms to drive the society ahead in the right direction.

Three Nepalis receive UN award posthumously

In recognition of the contribution made by the United Nations to the establishment of international peace, three members of the Nepali Peace Mission till death have been honored with the ‘Dag Hammarskjöld Memorial Medal.’

The award was handed over by UN Secretary General António Guterres to Nepal’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Amrit Rai at a function held at the UN Headquarters in New York on Thursday.

The award was presented on the occasion of ‘Peace Keepers’ Day’ to the brave Nepali warriors who died in various UN missions. Umesh Kumar Mehtar from Nepal police, and Pitamber Thapa and Dipendra Wosti from Nepal Army died in Sudan, UNIFIL Lebanon and South Sudan respectively.

Ex-PM Bhattarai flays SC’s order to halt construction of Nijgadh Int’l Airport

Former Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has strongly objected to the Supreme Court’s order to halt the construction of Nijgadh International Airport.

Bhattarai also mentioned that he was ashamed of the court order to stop important projects in the country.

“When I announced the projects of national pride, I mentioned Kathmandu-Terai Fast track and Nijgadh Airport as number one and Budhigandaki hydropower project as number two,” he said.

Bhattarai has said that the apex court has dealt another blow inhibiting the development of the country.

Bharatpur Mayor Renu Dahal injured in road accident

Newly elected Mayor of Bharatpur Metropolitan City, Renu Dahal has been injured in a road accident in Kathmandu on Friday afternoon. Her vehicle had met with an accident near Staff College, Jawalakhel, Lalitpur.

According to Maoist Center sources, Mayor Dahal’s vehicle (Province 3-01-023 Cha 7318) collided with an electric pole due to a flat tire and Dahal sustained minor head injuries.

Mayor Dahal has been admitted to Sumeru Hospital for treatment.

Although few stiches are put on the head, the Mayor is out of danger, the source informed.
