KATHMANDU: Renowned American ski mountaineer Hilaree Nelson has gone missing in Mount Manaslu avalanche.
According to Jeevan Ghimire, Managing Director of Shangrila Nepal Treks Pvt Ltd in Kathmandu, Jim Morrison, who went skiing along with Nelson, has already returned to the base camp safely. However, the whereabouts of Nelson as of Monday evening is yet to be known.
“Hilaree is missing from Bhimthanka, which lies towards Manang,” said Ghimire. He added all other mountaineers and Sherpas going to Manaslu for autumn climb were safe.
On September 30, 2018, Nelson and partner Morrison made the first ski descent of the “Dream Line”, the Lhotse Couloir from the summit. She also holds the record of skiing down from the peaks of two eight thousanders.
She is also the first female to summit two 8000-meter peaks (Everest and Lhotse) in one 24 hour push on 25 May 2012.
Born in Seattle, USA, Nelson was named one of “The Most 25 Adventurous Women of the Past 25 Years” by Men’s Journal, as well as being named as one of National Geographic’s 2018 Adventurers of the Year.
