New species of bird detected in Chitwan

CHITWAN: A new species of bird has been detected in Chitwan district. New bird ‘Salne Bagedi’ was detected in a Sisau tree near the Shiva Temple at Kumroj buffer zone in the Chitwan National Park (CNP).

According to Coordinator of Nepalese Ornithological Union, Bagmati, Basu Bidari, said that the bird species, found in the mountainous region, was detected for the first time in Chitwan. He shared that the bird might have migrated to the district due to dipping temperature and lack of food in the mountainous region.

Also the former Chairperson of Bird Education Society, Chitwan, Bidari further said that a team of ornithologists identified the species of the bird after photographers Chudamani Chaudhary and Prem Bamjan took its snapshot. The bird species is found at an altitude ranging from 2440 to 3,050 meters from sea level.

Chairperson of the Bird Education Society, Chitwan, Ramesh Chaudhary, said that a pair of birds belonging to ‘Salne’ species was found in course of monitoring. With this, the number of birds of Bagedi species, out of a total of 15 detected in Nepal, has reached 10 in Chitwan alone.

The bird with shy nature is found on grassland and in the surrounding areas of farmlands. Mainly, the bird of this species is found in European countries as well as Nepal, China and Afghanistan.

Chitwan has reportedly become the habitat of 659 different species of birds.
