KATHMANDU: The top leaders of the ruling coalition have concluded that President Bidya Devi Bhandari was politically motivated with regard to Citizenship Bill.

President Bhandari intensified consultations with retired Army officials and legal eagles after the House of Representatives passed the Citizenship Bill, which she had returned with a message, without making any amendments to it.

She consulted with military officers and legal experts only on Wednesday.

The top leaders of the ruling coalition on Thursday discussed the President’s intensified consultations on Wednesday and talks doing rounds about her resignation.

Likewise, in the ruling coalition meeting today, Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba apprised top leaders about the meeting he held with opposiition leader KP Sharma Oli on Wednesday.

While PM Deuba apprised the leaders, President’s intensified meetings had cropped up.

Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP) Chairman Upendra Yadav, who is also a former foreign minister, viewed that President’s consulations were unconstitutional.

Similarly, CPN-Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ said that the President’s activism was unnatural. He viewed that there was no point in protesting the Citizenship Bill as the current President Bhandari had also participated in the course of drafting the bill in 2006.

Senior Congress leader Ramchandra Paudel also expressed dissatisfaction with the President’s activism, while Home Minister Balkrishna Khan briefed top leaders about the work he was doing to explain the bill.

A leader who participated in the meeting said, “Everyone thought that the President’s activism politically motivated.”
