Naturalized citizenship to the woman only after relinquishing former citizenship: Bamdev Gautam

KATHMANDU: National Assembly member Bamdev Gautam has said that foreign women should be granted naturalized citizenship for marrying a Nepali national only after renouncing the citizenship of her country.

Taking part in the discussion on the Nepal Citizenship (First Amendment) Bill 2022 at the National Assembly meeting on Monday, he said that foreign women should be granted citizenship through marriage only after the process of relinquishing the citizenship of the respective country has been initiated or proof of relinquishment has been submitted.

Leader Gautam said that the bill is necessary for citizens who have not been able to get citizenship, and he said that no one in the world should remain in a state of non-citizenship.

The bill, which was passed by the House of Representatives, provides that married foreign women will immediately become eligible to get citizenship through marriage. In addition, the bill also provides for non-resident Nepali to get citizenship so that they can operate economic, social, and cultural activities.
