48,197 candidates file nominations for May 13 local election

KATHMANDU: As many as 48,197 candidates have registered their nomination papers in the offices of election officers across the country on Monday.

According to the Election Commission (EC), 1,657 people registered themselves as mayoral candidates and 975 as deputy mayors. There are 293 municipalities across the country.

Similarly, 1,610 people filed nomination for the post of chairpersons and 1,050 for deputy chairpersons in 460 rural municipalities across the country.

A total of 12,312 candidates have registered for the post of ward chairmen in 6,743 wards across the country. The number of candidates for ward members is 12,517.

Similarly, 7,693 people filed their candidacies for the post of women members while 6,711 people for the post of Dalit women members.

The Election Commission said the number of candidates would increase as those waiting in queue till 5 pm would be able to register their candidacies.
