"Strategy to exert pressure on NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba"



KATHMANDU: The disgruntled faction of the Nepali Congress (NC) led by Shekhar Koirala has intensified discussions in a bid to exert pressure on the party leadership to get as many tickets for the faction’s members in the November 20 elections.

On Friday, leaders of the faction met at a house in Swoyambhu as “groundwork” for today’s meeting of the faction.

The faction is holding a gathering today (Saturday) to exert pressure on Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.

According to a leader of the disgruntled camp, they are gathering to increase pressure on NC President Deuba.

The Koirala-led faction has been demanding a respectable stake in the distribution of tickets for the November 20 elections to the House of Representatives and State Assembly.

Sources have claimed that the faction is demanding more than 20 seats in the HoR while the party leadership has been insisting on not more than 10 seats to the Koirala camp.

Koirala recently told a meeting in Biratnagar that NC should not settle for less than 100 seats to get a majority in the November 20 elections to the House of Representatives.

He believes that Nepali Congress will not garner a majority if it fielded candidates in less than 100 constituencies.

“NC should not compromise less than 100 seats,” Koirala said at a time when the party leadership is under pressure from other ruling partners to agree on 80 seats.

Koirala has also warned that there will be a rebellion within the party if NC President Deuba agreed on 80 seats with the ruling coalition.
