Over 1,000 fowls culled after bird flu



SURKHET: Some 1,300 turkeys have been destroyed after detecting bird flu at a turkey farm of Tatopani in Birendranagar Municipality-3, Surkhet.

A test conducted at the Central Livestock Investigation Laboratory confirmed the bird flu in turkey.

A sample was sent to the laboratory after 100 turkeys died in the farm, according to Chief of Livestock Development Directorate, Prachanda Khadka.

With this, an emergency meeting of the district administration office in Surkhet decided to cull the fowls- turkey, broiler and local chicken in the areas within 500 meters of the farm.

A veterinary team reached the spot and culled the fowls- 1,200 broiler chicken, 80 turkeys and other local chicken.

Chief District Officer Khagendra Prasad Rijal informed that the farmers in the Surkhet Valley were made aware of the possible spread of bird flu.
