JSP’s Singh elected Birgunj mayor, NC’s Alam deputy mayor

BIRGUNJ: Candidates of five-party alliance have won the post of mayor and deputy mayor in Birgunj, the only metropolis in Madhes Pradesh.

According to the results of the vote count held on Tuesday morning, Rajeshman Singh of Janata Samajwadi Party has won the post of mayor and Imtiaz Alam of Nepali Congress (NC) has won the post of deputy mayor.

According to Chief Election Officer Dharmaraj Poudel, Singh got 46,215 votes. His nearest rival Bijay Sarawagi of UML got 23,671 votes. Singh defeated Sarawagi, who is also the outgoing mayor, by a margin of 22,544 votes. Another mayoral candidate Girish Giri of RPP got 3,313 votes.

Imtiaz Alam of NC got 30,078 votes while his nearest rival Purushottam Lal Jha of the Loktantrik Samajwadi Party (LSP) got 9,568 votes.

Alam defeated Jha by a margin of 20,510 votes. Alam, who won the post of deputy mayor, is also the NC Parsa district secretary. UML and LSP had formed an alliance for mayor and deputy mayor.
