Explosions heard in east Ukraine as Putin announces military operation



KYIV: Explosions have been heard to the east of the city’s international airport in the Ukraine’s capital city Kyiv moments after Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military operation on Thursday morning.

According to a CNN report, Russian President announced a military action in Donbas, which contains two separatist-held regions of Ukraine.

Social media users reported hearing several explosions in the Boryspil area to the east of the capital, where the international airport is located about 25 kilometers (15 miles) from the city,

Earlier Thursday, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky made an appeal for peace to Russian citizens, saying they were not enemies — but that Kyiv would defend itself against any invasion.

He said he had tried to call Putin on Wednesday but in vain.

Meanwhile, the Ukrainian government is set to introduce a state of emergency across all parts of the country under its control following Moscow’s actions in eastern Ukraine.
