Pressure mounting on top leaders as deadline to pass MCC approaches

KATHMANDU: Pressure is mounting on top leaders to pass the US-funded Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact.

Top leaders in the government, therefore, have taken the initiative and led the process forward.

The ruling party Nepali Congress is in favor of endorsing the MCC.

Similarly, pressure is mounting on CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal alias Prachanda and CPN (Unified Socialist) Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal to pass the MCC.

The chapter of MCC agreement started in 2068 BS when Dr Baburam Bhattarai was the Prime Minister but when it came to the stage of approval, Prachanda and Dr. Bhattarai, who were in the same party before, are leading different parties.

Hence, both leaders are under moral pressure to approve the MCC project they have put forward.

Dr Bhattarai is not in a position to reject the request of the Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba for MCC approval as this issue is also linked with the ruling coalition.
