KATHMANDU: Acting Ambassador of China in Nepal, Wang Xin, has intensified political meetings with Nepal’s left political parties in a bid to exert pressure on them to forge left unity.
As part of his political meetings, Wang on Friday met with Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda and showed concern over the possible power equation in Nepal.
According to a Maoist leader, China is exerting pressure on Prachanda to not give up the claim of the prime minister.
In today’s meeting as well, Wang said that China wants to see Prachanda as the prime minister.
Observers believe that China is of the view that Prachanda can forge left unity supported by CPN-UML, Unified Samajbadi and Janata Samajbadi Party.
It should be noted that a Chinese delegation had come to Nepal before the November 20 election to analyze the situation.
Some others visited Nepal after the election in Nepal to evaluate the election victory.
Likewise, immediately after, another team started lobbying for unity among communist leaders in the name of investment in various business projects.
According to government sources, a Chinese team has come to Kathmandu this week and is putting pressure to forge Left Alliance.
The Chinese ambassador is also likely to come to Nepal next week.
Even during the election, the Chinese were active through different delegations.
Meanwhile, Maoist leader Barsaman Pun, who went to China for treatment, has increased his activities for the Left Alliance after returning to Kathmandu.
Sources said that all Chinese efforts are to get Prachanda out of the alliance. Meanwhile, China is also making all necessary preparations for it.
Prachanda, who made a public commitment that he would not break the current Democratic-Left alliance before and after the election, has said that he is finding it difficult to give up his claim on the Prime Ministership due to geopolitical constraints, reflecting the increasing Chinese pressure.
After returning from China, Maoist leader Pun intensified meetings to form a government together with the UML and make Prachanda the prime minister.
Earlier, Maoist General Secretary Dev Gurung, Narayankaji Shrestha and others also took the initiative for left unity but Prachanda had taken a stand in favor of not breaking the alliance.
UML Chairman KP Oli, leaders Bishnu Paudel and Subash Nembang also tried to convince Prachanda for Left unity.
A source said Prachanda was positive about supporting Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba as the prime minister in the first phase and bringing in a non-political person as the President, who is not controversial and is acceptable internationally.
A Maoist leader, insisting on anonymity, said that if Prachanda becomes the prime minister in the name of Left Unity, Nepal will fall into a geopolitical crisis.
“There is a danger, and we are constantly trying to convince him,” a leader said.
Maoist leaders, however, believe that UML Chair Oli can betray Prachanda once again if he joined the Left coalition.
“If Prachanda falls into the temptation of becoming the Prime Minister in a hurry, Oli will betray us any day and we will be in danger of being in crisis, on the other hand, due to the effect on the way India and the rest of the world look at us,” the leader said.
Another Maoist leader told Khabarhub that limited leaders including Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Dev Gurung, Barshaman Pun are trying to misguide Prachanda at the behest of some power (China).
A Maoist leader close to Prachanda said that despite intense lobbying from all parties, Prachanda is most probably will remain in the current alliance.
Pun, who has a close relationship with China, has said that there is no alternative to unity among the communists, so he is actively trying to make Prachanda decide to break the alliance.
JSP Chairman Upendra Yadav is also in favor of Alliance.
UML leaders Prithvi Subba Gurung, Yogesh Bhattarai, among others have intensified activities for Left unity lately.
