Ukraine forces fighting to retake ground from Russia: US

Ukrainian soldiers are successfully fighting back against invading Russian forces to reclaim ground in some parts of the country, the Pentagon says.

There are reports of the Ukrainian flag being raised again in the suburb of Makariv, west of the capital Kyiv, BBC said.

But Russian bombardment of the southern port city of Mariupol continues unabated.

About 100,000 civilians remain trapped inside the city in “inhumane conditions”, says Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Nato to discuss role of China: Stoltenberg

Nato members face a fundamentally changed security environment where authoritarian governments are prepared to use force, Nato’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg says.

“I expect we will address the role of China in this crisis,” the Nato secretary-general said.

China has provided Russia with political support including by spreading “blatant lies and misinformation,” he stated.

Rohingya Muslims Hail US Recognition of Genocide in Myanmar

Forced to flee ethnic and religious persecution in their own country, Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh are welcoming the formal recognition by the United States that Myanmar’s military regime committed genocide against the Muslim minority.

“We are very happy on the declaration of the genocide; many, many thanks,” Sala Uddin, a 60-year-old refugee at a camp in Bangladesh, said, according to The Associated Press.

“It has been 60 years, starting from 1962, that the Myanmar government has been torturing us and many other communities including Rohingya,” he said. “I think a path to take action by the international community against Myanmar has opened up because of the declaration.”

US Special Immigration Program Refers More Than 5,000 Afghan Refugees to Canada

The U.S. State Department has referred more than 5,000 Afghan refugees who were seeking admission to the United States to a parallel program in Canada, where waiting times for permanent residence are shorter.

State Department officials confirmed to VOA those referred to the special immigration program are not simultaneously going through the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP).

One of two black boxes found from crashed China Eastern jet

Chinese searchers found one of two black boxes from a China Eastern Airlines (600115.SS) plane that crashed this week in forest-clad mountains with 132 people onboard, the aviation regulator said.

The device was severely damaged, and it was not immediately clear if it was the flight data recorder or the cockpit voice recorder, an official of the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) told a media briefing.

Flight MU5735 was en route from the southwestern city of Kunming to Guangzhou on the coast on Monday when the Boeing 737-800 jet suddenly plunged from cruising altitude at about the time when it should have started its descent ahead of landing.

S.Korea’s total COVID cases top 10 million as crematoria, funeral homes overwhelmed

South Korea’s total coronavirus infections topped 10 million, or nearly 20% of its population, authorities said on Wednesday, as surging severe cases and deaths increasingly put a strain on crematories and funeral homes nationwide.

The country has been battling a record COVID-19 wave driven by the highly infectious Omicron variant even as it largely scrapped its once aggressive tracing and quarantine efforts and eased social distancing curbs.
