KATHMANDU: China has termed the United States grant Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact in Nepal as a form of coercive diplomacy.

Hua Chunying, who is Chinese Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs as well as Foreign Ministry Spokesperson and Director General, Information Department, MFA People’s Republic of China, concluded that MCC was a form of coercive diplomacy the US was pursuing in Nepal.

Taking to Twitter Wednesday, she asked if gifts are to be received with an ultimatum. “The #US described the $500 million MCC, a US-funded infrastructure program in #Nepal, as a“gift from the American people”, but meanwhile gave Nepal an ultimatum. Should a gift be delivered by an ultimatum? Coercive diplomacy,” her tweet read.

China has been active to stall the ratification of MCC in Nepal and has already achieved success in fomenting an irascible situation over MCC posing a threat to the safety and security of ordinary citizens in Nepal.
