KATHMANDU: A Nepali national has been sentenced to four years in prison in Australia for swindling more than $200,000 through ‘hundi’ transaction.

The County Court of Victoria in Australia has sentenced a Nepali national Bharat KC to 46 months in prison on charge of swindling more than $200,000 through ‘hundi’ transactions, according to NepalTube Online, an Australian news website.

Having spent a year and a half already in police custody, KC has been sent to jail for the remainder of his sentence.

The court said the verdict was issued to prevent further danger to the society after KC repeatedly committed the offence, with many families bearing the brunt of his action.

One of the victims has claimed compensation from KC within the next six months. Most of KC’s victims are found to be Nepali students. Some have been defrauded of more than $30,000.

About two years ago, KC had pledged to, in writing, not repeating the offence and returning the swindled amounts to victims before the Nepali community and media persons in Australia, he did not give up defrauding others.

Australian law provides for the deportation of a person sentenced to more than one year in prison.

The immigration authority of Australia has also been informed in this regard.
