A month left to go for HoR and Provincial Assembly elections

KATHMANDU: The House of Representatives (HoR) and Provincial Assembly elections are now a month away.

The twin elections are slated on November 20.

The Election Commission, the Government of Nepal and the concerned sides are delivering on necessary and preparatory works in view of the upcoming elections.

The Constitution of Nepal has enshrined a provision for proportional representation (PR) and First-Past-the-Post (FPTP) system.

As per this provision, 165 members out of 275 will be elected HoR member while 320 (60 percent of the total numbers) out of 520 will be elected provincial assembly members through the proportional election system.

Remaining members will be elected through FPTP system, also known as direct system.

The Election Commission has already published the final details of the nomination letter containing candidates vying the upcoming election in FPTP system while it is scheduled to publish notice about the removal of the names of the candidates from closed list on October 26.

Similarly, on October 27, the Commission is set to publish the closed list of the candidates for the final time.

Likewise, altogether 17,988,570 eligible voters are enlisted with the Commission at present.

Among them 8,847,579 were female voters and 9,140,806 were male. Also, 158 belonged to ‘others’ category.

Those registering themselves in the voter list and completing 18 years by November 19 this year and are enlisted in the final voter list of the Commission are eligible to cast vote in the upcoming elections, the Commission said.

There are a total of 10,891 polling stations while the number of polling centers stands at 22,226.
