NC leader Thapa bats for electoral coordination with predetermined objectives

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Kumar Thapa has said that coalition should be forged among parties in the upcoming federal and provincial elections with predetermined objectives.

Speaking at a press conference organized by Nepal Press Union Chitwan in Chitwan today, Thursday, NC leader Thapa said that the objectives of the alliance should be decided in advance. He viewed that alliance formed after and before the election served no purpose.

He said, “The purpose of coordination should be made clear beforehand. Does alliance connect the parties with the people or not?” Stating that such matters were to be thought of beforehand, he clarified that the alliance for immediate benefit was not necessary.

He said that there should be a minimum agreement on electoral coordination for the upcoming elections. He added minimum understanding among the parties should be on constitutional perspectives, economic and social issues, and foreign policy, prior to the elections. “If parties could not agree on these issues, the the parties are better off without an alliance,” he added.

He pointed out that coalition forged without developing minimum understanding on the various issues would not be long-lasting and could serve as the basis of spilt and bitterness among parties after the elections are over.

Parties could engage in quarrels once they win the election, if the objectives are not decided earlier and the NC should keep this in mind while forging alliance, he said.

On a different note, he said that NC office bearers were pressuring the party president to run the party within the bounds of statute to strengthen the party.
