KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) general secretary duo has advised the Prime Minister to close the chapter of United States’ State Partnership Program (SPP) once and for all.

General Secretaries Gagan Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma held a discussion with NC President and Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba in Baluwatar Monday morning. They touched upon various issues related to the party, government and contemporary politics in the meeting.

During the meeting, the general secretary duo urged PM Deuba to put an end to the chapter of SPP forever. “Let’s end SPP debacle with the government forming a common view and following the necessary procedures. Let’s close the issue of SPP by sending a letter from the government,” they said.

The two general secretaries also demanded that the government come up with programs to provide relief to the people in relation to the rise in prices of petroleum products. They also urged the PM to discuss the issue of stock market with the stakeholders to resolve emergent problems.

According to Thapa’s secretariat, internal discussions were also held on party’s policy general convention, central working committee meeting, formation of departments, giving full shape to party’s organizations.

The discussions are to continue on Tuesday as well.

The NC, which held its 14th general convention last December, has yet to give full shape to party structures.

Despite a binding provision in the NC statute to give full shape to organizational structures within six months of the conclusion of the general convention, the party’s has yet to nominate all of office bearers and its central working committee, central performance committee and the parliamentary board are also vacant.

They also drew party President Deuba’s attention towards completing tasks such as formation of party’s Disciplinary Committee, Central Election Committee, Central Policy, Research and Training Academy and Central Departments by July 24.

The NC Central Working Committee had dissolved the working committees of 10 sister organizations on February 15 and had entrusted party Chief Deuba to form Ad Hoc committees by mid-March.

However, Deuba has yet to establish them although he nominated the president of Nepal Student Union and Tarun Dal on February 21.

Organization such as Nepal Mahila Sangh, Nepal Prajatantra Senani Sangh, Nepal Kisan Sangh, Nepal Adivasi Janajati Sangh, Nepal Loktantrik Apanga Sangh, Nepal Tamang Sangh, Nepal Thakur Samaj and Nepal Ex-Servicemen’s Association have not had leadership for four months.

These issues are going to figure in the party’s upcoming Central Working Committee meeting.

Following Tuesday’s discussions with NC leaders, the party is likely to decide the date for the Central Working Committee meeting.

The NC also has not held a review meeting of the local elections that was concluded on May 13.
