KATHMANDU: The number of Chinese nationals arriving in Nepal by obtaining labor permits has increased exponentially.

According to the Department of Labor and Occupational Safety, 6,100 Chinese have obtained labor permits to work in Nepal in the last five years from 2017 till March 19, 2022.

The Department of Labor and Occupational Safety issues labor permits to foreign nationals coming to work in Nepal.

According to the Department of Foreign Employment, 1,316 Nepalis went to China for foreign employment in the same period.

“Many projects are being implemented in the country with Chinese investment and China has brought its citizens to work on these projects. That is why the Chinese labor rate is higher than other countries,” said Umakanta Acharya, director general of the Department of Labor and Occupational Safety.

In the last five years, a total of 8,565 foreign nationals obtained labor permits from the Department of Labor and Occupational Safety to work in Nepal and about two-thirds of them are Chinese nationals.

In the review period, 416 Britons, 250 Americans, 183 South Koreans and 130 Japanese nationals obtained labor permit to work in Nepal. Also, citizens of 99 countries took labor permits to work in Nepal during the period.

Meanwhile, the number of Nepalis going to work in China is far smaller compared to Chinese coming to work in Nepal.

According to the Department of Foreign Employment, only three Nepalis have obtained labor permit to work in China in the first eight months of the current fiscal year 2021/22.
