Ruling coalition meeting scheduled for today put off

KATHMANDU: A meeting of the ruling coalition scheduled for today to finalize the date for elections has been postponed.

A meeting of the political coordination committee called at Prime Minister’s Official Residence in Baluwatar at 4 pm has been adjourned citing lack of preparations.

A meeting held on Tuesday had held discussions on the upcoming elections but had ended without reaching a concrete decision.

Even though the Election Commission recommended to hold the elections on mid-April to mid-May, the government has yet to take a final decision on it.

The government has been under pressure to finalize the date for elections within this week. The ruling coalition has been discussing to hold federal elections in mid-April to mid-May and local elections in mid-October to mid-November.

The government has to hold elections two months before the expiry of the terms of the rural and municipal assemblies, according to the Local Level Elections Act, 2017.
