Ruling coalition meeting put off citing lack of preparation

To resume at 2 pm

KATHMANDU: The ruling coalition meeting scheduled for 11:30 am today has been adjourned for 2 pm, citing a lack of preparations.

With hardly six days to go before the deadline for the nomination filing, the ruling alliance is struggling hard to finalize the distribution of metropolises and sub-metropolises.

The ruling coalition meeting to be held at Baluwatar today is expected to reach an agreement on the distribution of metropolitan and sub-metropolitan cities.

A meeting of the ruling coalition held on Monday failed to reach an agreement to finalize the distribution of metropolis and sub-metropolises.

The meeting of the ruling coalition met twice yesterday but failed to reach an agreement, said Nepali Congress leader and Minister for Communications and Information Technology Gyanendra Bahadur Karki.

Ruling coalition leaders, earlier, had vowed to conclude the process of candidate selection in six metropolitan cities and 11 sub-metropolitan cities by Monday.

Of the six metropolitan cities, the NC has agreed to take over Kathmandu, Lalitpur, and Biratnagar metropolises while CPN (Maoist Center) and Janata Samajwadi Party will field their candidates in Bharatpur and Birgunj metropolises, respectively, as per the agreement.

Even though there had been an agreement to hand over the Pokhara Metropolitan City to CPN (Unified Socialist), local leaders including the NC President of the Kaski district have been dissatisfied with the decision. They have been suggesting that the NC should take over the Pokhara metropolis.

With the grievances cropping up in the party, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba has called a meeting with the leaders of the Kaski district at Baluwatar.
