Seven local governments sign MoU with land commission

KATHMANDU: At least seven local governments in Baitadi district have signed memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Land Commission.

Local governments signing MoU with the commission are Purchaudi, Melaluli and Patan municipalities and Pancheswor, Shivanath, Sigas and Surnaya rural municipalities.

According to the National Law Commission’s district chairperson Sharma Singh Eir, the local governments had signed memorandum of understanding for collection of data of landless, Dalit and squatters so as to develop well-managed settlements.

With the signing of the agreement, the Commission would collect data of unmanaged settlements along with landless squatters in the district.

“The task would gain momentum after both the sides enter into an agreement. We would manage unorganized settlements, landless and squatters”, he said.

Chairperson Eir shared they have urged other three local governments in the district for signing MoU.

As informed, Dilashaini and Dogadakedar rural municipalities and Dasharathchand municipality are yet to come to the MoU process.

It is claimed that the problem of landless squatters was not resolved due to lack of common understanding between the commission and local governments. The signing of the agreement is expected to crack the nut on landless issue.
