AIG Pokharel resigns

KATHMANDU: Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Nepal Police Bishworaj Pokharel has resigned from the post on Monday.

He submitted his resignation in person at the Human Resource Department of the Nepal Police today.

Pokharel had moved the Supreme Court against the government’s decision to appoint Dhiraj Pratap Singh as Inspector General of Police.

AIG Pokharel resigned after the Supreme Court did not give a verdict in his favor last Friday.

His resignation will be submitted to the Ministry of Home Affairs through the Inspector General of Police and to the Council of Ministers through the Home Ministry. The resignation of AIG has to be approved by the Council of Ministers.

After the government appointed Singh as IGP, Pokharel was on leave.

The then Inspector General Shailesh Thapa Chhetri approved a one-month leave.  Although Pokharel had applied for the leave again, IGP Singh did not approve the leave application for the second time.

As the absence in the office for continuous 45 days makes police officials face disciplinary action and Pokharel had not joined the office despite the Headquarters’ refusal to grant him leave, Pokharel resigned on Monday to avoid the action.

But AIG Pokharel did not go to the office. Pokharel has resigned because he will face action if he does not go to the office for 45 days continuously. His tenure is only till the 20th of July.
