Female police officer attempts suicide at Metropolitan Police Circle, Swayambhu

KATHMANDU: A female police officer has attempted to kill herself at the barracks of Metropolitan Police Circle, Swayambhu; reflecting worrying state of growing frustration and despair among police personnel.

The female officer tried to hang herself at around 8:30 am Sunday morning when there were very few working police personnel at the barracks. Nonetheless, she was saved by fellow police personnel and is currently undergoing treatment at the police hospital.

Officials at Swayambhu do not know what made the 25-year-old young and unmarried officer to attempt taking her life. The hospital is working to help the officer through counseling.

Metropolitan Police Range Kathmandu, meanwhile, launched an investigation into the incident at a time when it has been running campaigns to discourage suicide among the public. The police are looking into the economic and personal relationship angles behind the suicide attempt of the female officer.

A few days ago, SSP Sushil Kumar Yadav had also killed himself, frustrated by unequal and non-transparent rules of career development within the police organization.

A serious question arises in the police organization if the female officer’s case is like Yadav’s case.
