KATHMANDU: The Young Communist League (YCL) Nepal, the youth wing of CPN (Maoist Center), drew the attention of the government to take necessary steps on the behalf of the State to keep the economic indicators positive and balanced.
Handing over a memorandum to Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba on Saturday, YCL delegates pointed out that the government’s efforts to reduce the negative impact of COVID-19 pandemic on Nepal’s economy were not sufficient.
Calling for adopting measures such as promoting exports and discoursing imports, creating production-based economy, cutting down on unnecessary expenses and adhering to economic frugality among others to address the economic issues facing the country, the YCL delegates demanded action against those high-ranking authorities giving pessimistic expressions.
They citing expression of high-ranking officials of the State often saying ‘Nepal could be like Sri Lanka’, opined that such statements had circulated pessimism among the people and instigated the situation.
They also demanded that the Governor of the Nepal Rastra Bank, Maha Prasad Adhikari, be relieved from his post and be probed, stating that it was revealed that he was the member of the CPN (UML)’s Department of Finance and Planning.
Furthermore, the YCL, through the memo, has demanded cancellation of the budget allocated for the purchase of weapons for the Nepal Police, arguing that it was against the need of the nation and aspiration of the citizens at a time when the country was facing complicated economic situation.
The attention of the youth wing has been drawn to the allocation of budget to establish organizations in the name of Chief Minister and ministers of Gandaki Province and relatives of political parties instead of cutting budget for unproductive sector, said YCL Chair Suman Devkota in the memo.
He also urged the federal, provincial and local government to remove the trend of ‘misusing’ budget and increase faith of people in democracy.
Stating that scores of people lost their lives to natural disasters like flooding, landslides and fire every year, the YCL demanded training sessions for all youths aged 18-40 to provide security and protect properties of the country and citizens and increase their skills and capacity.
“Farmers have been deprived of fertilisers and seeds in time. As a result, contribution of agriculture to the gross domestic product is at risk. Students have yet to get textbooks even three months after new academic season has begun. All these problems should be resolved at the earliest,” read the memo.
