NC calls for support to endorse impeachment motion

KATHMANDU: The ruling Nepali Congress (NC) has appealed with the coalition partners and all opposition parties to stay firm on the impeachment motion against the Chief Justice and support the government to endorse the proposal seeking impeachment.

The meeting of central working execution committee Tuesday urged all political parties to endorse the impeachment motion registered at the parliament against Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher JBR, stating that it was sovereign parliament that is constitutionally tasked to give pace to judiciary.

NC stated that it took the lead to register impeachment motion to prevent any type of attack on the essence of democracy and justice and to keep the public’s confidence on the court intact, according to a press statement released after the meeting.

Acknowledging the judiciary’s role in Nepal’s democratic movements, the NC has said that it was our responsibility to prevent any activities that would ridicule the glorious history of the judiciary leadership that always stood by the side of democracy and public’s freedom, reads the statement.

The ruling party said that it has seriously taken the accusations against the CJ such as such a responsible public figure failing to raise the prestige, value and effectiveness of the judiciary and increase public’s confidence towards judiciary.

The party also said that it was also serious about accusation against CJ that he lacked constitutional discipline, morality and competence, inducting people close to him and involvement in corruption among others.

“Free and impartial judiciary is the major pillar of democracy. The major aspect of keeping intact the sanctity of judiciary is its leadership and its moral duty of judiciary leadership and we all should to keep judiciary’s glory intact. Liberal democracy and protection of people’s right as believed by NC are not possible without free, impartial and able judiciary and similar judiciary leadership,” reads the statement.
