Impeachment panel in discussions with lawyers named by suspended CJ Rana



KATHMANDU: The parliamentary Impeachment Recommendation Committee has begun discussions with the legal eagles named by the suspended Chief Justice (CJ) Cholendra Shumsher Rana during his statement before the panel.

Earlier, the Impeachment Recommendation Committee meeting, which was supposed to be held at 1 pm, was postponed to 3 pm.

The panel is in discussions with 7 legal professionals, including two former office bearers of Nepal Bar Association.

Outgoing President of Nepal Bar Chandeshwor Shrestha, General Secretary Leelamani Paudyal, former presidents of Nepal Bar Shambhu Thapa, Harihar Dahal, Former Attorney General Raman Shrestha, Advocate Omprakash Aryal are in discussions with the impeachment panel.

Though Nepal Bar Association President Gopalkrishna Ghimire, General Secretary Anjita Khanal, Senior Advocate Krishna Prasad Bhandari and Advocate Harak Rawal appeared before the impeachment panel they were not allowed to stay in the meeting, stating that suspended CJ Rana had not mentioned their names.

Earlier, sitting judges and former chief justices of the Supreme Court issued a statement and said that they would not abide by the summon of the impeachment panel, citing that it would be against the professional integrity and the concept of independent judiciary.

The impeachment committee on Wednesday had written to former CJs—Min Bahadur Rayamajhi, Anup Raj Sharma, Kalyan Shrestha and Sushila Karki — and other sitting Supreme Court justices asking them to appear before the impeachment panel to record their statements for investigations based on the statements given by Rana.
