KATHMANDU: Female fertility-related diseases which are more common in India have also become a problem in Nepal.

According to statistics, the disease called ‘Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is seen in nearly 50 percent of women in Nepal.

Doctors say that this problem is more common in women between the ages of 20 and 40. It is also considered a problem that some women do not know the cause of this disease.

Even though some people know about the issue, it is difficult to tell the family and they are ashamed to ask the doctor for advice.

Such problems have increased even when making their lifestyle more luxurious. Focusing on the same topic, an edited part of a conversation conducted by Bina Neupane with reproductive disease specialist Nijaraj Bhandari working at Vatsalya Hospital. Excerpts:

How can this polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) be taken easily?

This problem appears after a hormone disorder in a woman’s body. It is not seen in all people. It can also be caused by ‘heredity’.

This is the current standard of living where we eat junk food. Due to this obesity increases and this problem is seen in women. In earlier times, there was no diagnosis. But, now it is seen a lot.

What are its symptoms?

First, if the menstrual period is less than 21 days and more than 35 days, one should check to ensure there is no PCOD. After this problem, pimples appear, and body hair grows too much.

In which age group do we find the problem is more visible in which age group?

Generally, this problem is noticed in people of 15 to 45 years. However, many of these occur around the time menstruation begins. Sometimes even before. Not checking can also lead to childlessness.

Does it only cause infertility or can other problems also appear?

If the menstruation is not regular in women, if the egg is not released from the ovary, the problem of infertility occurs. In polycystic, insulin hormones can function well in the body.

This may lead to other problems like diabetes or obesity. If menstruation is not regular, the bleeding line inside the uterus can become cancerous.

If this problem occurs in a mother with a child in her stomach, is it transmitted to her child?

Some may have problems. However, if it comes to one, it does not necessarily mean that it will come to the other. For this, a regular lifestyle should be improved. An improved lifestyle can be the best treatment for it.

After this problem appears, can something be done at home or should one go to the hospital?

It depends on the age. If you are only 15 to 21 years old, you should have menstruation at least 4 times a year. At that time there is a slight disturbance when menstruation occurs for the first time.

It may not be regular at that time. If it happens once in three months, it is not necessary to get checked. However, if you are overweight, blood pressure and diabetes will increase later, so we help you lose weight first.

Pills are given to adolescents. It not only acts as family planning but also induces menstruation. 20 to 30 years old women who are newly married have the problem of infertility.

To treat this we give the egg-forming medicine. Such medicines can be eaten orally. A low-dose hormone can also be given through injection.

First, we check it by giving harmonics from the outside. If that doesn’t work, we will go to the IBF. Hormones are used in stronger doses.

Can such treatment restore the health to the normal condition?

Polycystic is a condition. Once it’s there, it’s there. It depends on how to control it. Its first control is obesity. If obesity is controlled, it can return to its original state.

What should one pay attention to in order to avoid this problem?

Changing your lifestyle, doing physical exercise, paying special attention to diet to reduce obesity, and checkups during menstruation can be very helpful in curbing such problems.

Finally, is there anything that must be said about this matter?

Today’s women should recognize the disease from the beginning. After turning 18, it is better to visit a gynecologist once in a while.

Once you have had sex, whether or not you are married, visit a gynecologist. Not only PCOD but other problems are also identified through consultation with the doctor.
