UML to stand against impeachment motion against CJ Rana

KATHMANDU: The main opposition CPN-UML has decided to counter the ruling coalition parties’ impeachment motion against Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana.

A meeting of the UML parliamentary party (PP) chaired by its chair KP Sharma Oli at the International Convention Centre in Kathmandu Sunday took a decision to this effect.

The meeting concluded that the impeachment proposal was brought with the intention of postponing the local level election and endorsing the US’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) compact, said party chief whip Bishal Bhattarai, adding that they would counter the motion in the parliament, street and judiciary sector.

Party’s top leaders would take necessary steps (if any) in the future after analyzing the scenario and collection of signatures of lawmakers to this effect was underway, he said.

On the MCC agreement, responding to queries raised by lawmakers in the meeting, party chair Oli clarified that the UML would make its stance on the matter in favor of the country and people after the ruling coalition comes with its view on it. It may be noted that the UML has been obstructing parliament sessions demanding the implementation of action against its 14 former lawmakers.

Meanwhile, in course of the signature collection at the PP meeting, five lawmakers denied putting their signatures on blank sheets that did not disclose any agenda. Lawmakers Bhim Rawal, Ghanshyam Bhusal, Deepak Prakash Bhatt, Pabitra Niraula Kharel and Jhapat Rawal refused to sign the blank sheets.
