Speaker announces date for Deputy Speaker election

KATHMANDU: Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota has set the date for the election for the post of Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives on July 15.

In the ongoing meeting of the House of Representatives, Speaker Sapkota said that the election for the post of Deputy Speaker would be held on Friday, July 15 and directed the Parliament Secretariat to issue information accordingly.

The post of Deputy Speaker was lying vacant after the resignation of the then Deputy Speaker Shiva Maya Tumbahamphe on January 20, 2020.

The post of Vice-Chairman of the National Assembly is also vacant.

Lawmakers have been raising their voices saying that the Deputy Speaker and Vice-Chairman should be elected at the earliest as failure to do so makes the mockery of the parliamentary system itself.
