KAILALI: Nearly 700 families have been displaced due to the flood triggered by incessant rain in Tikapur Municipality, Kailali district.

Similarly, 36 families have been displaced in neighbouring Janaki Rural Municipality.

Forty-seven houses have been completely damaged due to flood in Tikapur Municipality.

The displaced families are facing drinking water and toilet problem after their houses suffered damage.

Among the flood-affected, more than 100 are pregnant women and new mothers, 320 are children below five years, 400 are children above five years, 55 are senior citizens, 20 are people with disabilities and nine are sick people, the Municipality said.

A meeting of the Disaster Management Committee has decided to provide relief to the flood-affected people on the basis of urgency.

The Municipality is making arrangements for tents, tarpaulin sheets, food grain, utensils, readymade foodstuff and straw mats as immediate support.

All the wards in Tikapur Municipality have been affected by the flood. Ward nos 5, 6, 7 and 8 are the worst-hit areas.

The Karnali River has burst its bank at several places of the municipality. As a result, the river has overflowed and flood water has entered the settlements.

At several locations the river has breached the embankment and entered the settlements.

The rice crop ready for harvest has also been damaged due to the inundation, causing loss to the farmers, said Dirgha Bahadur Thakulla, ward chair of Tikapur Municipality-8.

Thakulla fears of imminent food shortage in the area as the rice crop is massively damaged by flood, inundation and rainstorm.
