Provisions barring Minister from campaigning in polls need to change: Maoist leader Shrestha

KATHMANDU: National Assembly member Narayan Kaji Shrestha has opposed the provisions of the Election Code of Conduct, which prohibits ministers from campaigning.

In the meeting of parliamentary committee meeting of the NA held on Monday, lawmaker Shrestha said, “The political system is multi-party and the leaders are made ministers, but when ministers themselves are not candidates they cannot campaign,” he said. “This should be changed.”

He stressed saving resources of the state and government during elections and advocated to establish mechanisms to prevent misuse of state resources.

Shrestha, who is also the senior vice-president of the Maoist Center, also mentioned the problem of being on the closed list of the proportional election system.

He said, “Proportionate candidates have no role in the election campaign.”
