Top leaders of ruling coalition hold meeting in Baluwatar

KATHMANDU: Top leaders of the three major parties in the ruling coalition have held discussions on Saturday.

Prime Minister and Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN-Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and CPN-Unified Socialist Chairman Madhav Kumar Nepal met at the Prime Minister’s official residence in Baluwatar.

Of late, the ruling coalition is under pressure to make a decision over the United States grant Millennium Challenge Compact (MCC).

The NC is in favor of moving the agreement forward in the parliament at the earliest. However, leaders Prachanda and Nepal are of the view that the MCC agreement should not be passed without amendments.

This week, top leaders of the ruling coalition and the main opposition received a call from US Assistant Secretary of State Donald Lu, who expressed concern over ratification of MCC from parliament.

He warned that US would review its ties with Nepal if the compact fails to move forward in Nepal, adding that the US would attribute the doom of MCC to China’s intervention in Nepali politics.
