China’s top lawmaker Li arriving in Kathmandu tomorrow on four-day official visit

Li Zhanshu, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China, will be arriving in Kathmandu tomorrow (Monday) on a four-day official visit at the invitation of Speaker Agni Prasad Sapkota.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Li is scheduled to visit Nepal from September 12 to 15, 2022.

As said by Ministry Spokesperson Sewa Lamsal, he will be arriving in Kathmandu on a special flight in the afternoon of September 12.

Speaker Sapkota and Li will hold delegation-level bilateral talks tomorrow itself. The Speaker will host a banquet in honor of Li and the members of his delegation in the same evening.

Suspended CJ Rana ties ex-PM Oli and ex-FinMin Poudel to controversial approval of SC building contract

Suspended Chief Justice Cholendra Shumsher Rana, who is giving statements to the parliamentary Impeachment Recommendation Committee, has named then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel as abettors in approval of the contract for the building of the Supreme Court (SC).

Nepali Congress (NC) whip Meen Biswakarma said that Rana insulted the former Chief Justice, judges and senior lawyers in the course of his statement hearing. “Using abusive words, Rana has dragged people into the SC building contract controversy,” he said.

According to Biswakarma, a question was asked about the controversial approval of the building contract of the Supreme Court. “Rana accepted that undue influence.”

Although the registrar would have handled the contract approval, according to Rana, he took the matter into his own hands in the capacity of head of office.

“The then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Finance Minister Bishnu Poudel have also helped me. The then finance minister is right here, I was successful because of his support.”

Impeachment Recommendation Committee records statement from suspended CJ Rana

Cholendra Shumsher Rana, the suspended Chief Justice, has recorded his statement in today’s meeting of the impeachment recommendation committee.

Since recording of the statement was not completed today, the next meeting of the committee is summoned on Tuesday for the same purpose.

Responding to the lawmakers’ concerns, Rana reiterated that he had not carried out any activity that demoralized judiciary, thus, there was no reason to impeach him.

Asked about an allegation on appointment of justices for his people, Rana claimed that he had done nothing against the Constitution of Nepal but argued that judges were appointed based on political sharing. On the occasion, Rana claimed that he worked in line with the Constitution of Nepal and laws.

Of the 43 questions, the lawmakers of the impeachment recommendation committee have asked 35 questions so far, and question and answer on eight other issues would be convened on Tuesday, secretary of the committee, Laxmi Prasad Gautam said.

Question and answer of all the issues would be completed on Tuesday and remaining other acts would be advanced, according to Gautam.

The impeachment motion against Rana was registered in mid-February early this year but the first meeting of the committee was held after six months on August 17.

Likewise, the Nepal Bar Association and Supreme Court Bar Association had submitted a 34-point memo to the committee to support the allegation on the suspended CJ Rana.

CoAS Sharma completes a year at helm of Nepali Army

Chief of the Army Staff (CoAS) Prabhu Ram Sharma has completed a year in office today (Sunday).

At an event organized in the Army headquarters today to mark this occasion, CoAS Sharma directed army personnel to be always prepared for the protection and promotion of the nation.

“Army personnel will fulfil their constitutional responsibilities excellently while analyzing and carrying out a micro study of present developing international, regional and national security,” he said.

The Army chief was addressing the program virtually.

Nepal’s head coach for national football team Almutairi resigns

Nepal’s head coach for national football team Abdullah Almutairi has resigned from the post on Sunday.

He announced his resignation through social media.

“After 525 days in the service of Nepalese football, I announce the end of my tenure as coach of the Nepal national team,” he wrote on his Facebook page, adding, “Thank you to everyone who supported me on this journey that was not without moments of joy, love, sadness and pain. One Team, Jay Nepal.”

Immigration Department blacklists rape-accused cricketer Lamichhane

Suspended Nepali national cricket team captain Sandeep Lamichhane, who is accused of raping a 17-year-old girl, has been blacklisted by the Department of Immigration.

Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) Security Office said Lamichhane has been blacklisted and would be arrested as soon as he arrives in Nepal.

The District Court, Kathmandu, had given permission to arrest Lamichhane on September 8 after a complaint was filed against him at Police Circle Gaushala.

Lamichhane is currently out of the country and has said he would return to face the charges.

NEPSE loses 11.46 points to settle at 1,926.28 on Sunday

 The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index lost 11.46 points to close at 1926.28 points on Sunday.

The index lost 0.59 percent today (Sunday). The index had lost 2.13 points last Thursday.

Similarly, the sensitive index fell 2.10 points to close at 374.73 points.

The index that opened at 1,938.2 points made an intraday high of 1,946.42, an intraday low of 1,922 and ultimately closed at 1,926.28 points.

A total of 2,524,224 shares of 221 companies were traded via 20,124 transactions, resulting in a turnover of Rs 747 million in the secondary market today.

Ten still missing in Darchula floods

Ten people are still missing in the rain-induced floods and landslides in Mahakali Municipality in Darchula.

The rainfall since Friday night has taken its toll killing at least five people, and causing a massive property loss in the municipality and Naugadh Rural Municipality.

According to the District Police Office, Darchula, five people have so far confirmed dead in the incidents while ten others are missing.

The missing people have been identified as Dhansingh Karki, Dipak Karki and Dinesh Karki of Mahakali-3, Saraswoti Luhar and Mohan Luhar of Mahakali-4, Manamati Shah of Mahakali-2, Manju Luhar of Mahakali-1, and Dinesh Luhar, Sajan Luhar and Daljit Luhar of Mahakali-1.

Three students “missing” from Butwal found in Mumbai

Three students, who had gone missing in Butwal, have been found in India’s Mumbai in a state of unconsciousness.

They were found near a railway station in Mumbai, family sources said.

15-year-old Sagar Paudel and Samir Lamsal, and 14-year-old Pradeep Panthi of ward-11 Durganagar, of Butwal sub-metropolitan city, had gone missing since Friday.

The three, who left home on Friday morning, neither went to school nor returned home in the evening.

House Committee instructs OPMCM to punish those involved in illegal awarding of contract for Ktm-Terai Fast Track

The Development and Technology Committee under the parliament has instructed the government to take forward the process of taking action against those involved in illegally awarding contract for the Kathmandu-Terai/Madhesh Fast Track Project.

The 72.5 km-expressway stretches from Khokana of Lalitpur district to Nijgadh of Bara district via Makawanpur, thereby connecting the Kathmandu Valley with the East-West Highway. It is a four-lane expressway that is currently under construction.

The Committee’s meeting on Sunday instructed the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers (OPMCM) and Ministry of Defense to work in such a manner that the weakness and errors relating to the Project in the past would not be repeated in the future.

Nepal sees 104 new coronavirus cases, two deaths in past 24 hours

Nepal recorded a total of 104 new cases of coronavirus and two deaths in the past 24 hours as of Sunday.

Of the confirmed cases, 89 were detected through the RT-PCR method and 15 through the Antigen method.

According to the Ministry of Health and Population, a total of 3,587 swab samples were tested in the past 24 hours.

Of them, 1,592 samples were tested through RT-PCR and 1,995 through the Antigen method.

National Assembly meeting postponed till Wednesday morning

A meeting of the National Assembly (NA), which was supposed to tale place on Sunday at the Federal Parliament building, New Baneswor, has been postponed until Wednesday.

The Parliament Secretariat has not given any reason for the postponement.

Gold being traded at Rs 93,900 per tola today

The price of gold has remained unchanged in the domestic market today.

According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, the hallmark gold is being traded at Rs 93,900 per tola.

It had increased by Rs 100 on Friday.

Similarly, the price of worked gold is Rs 93,400 and silver Rs 1,150 per tola today.
