Janata Dal insists on fully proportional electoral system

KATHMANDU: Nepali Janata Dal has demanded the implementation of a full proportional electoral system in the upcoming federal and provincial elections.

Organizing a press meet at the Reporters’ Club on Monday, the party said the existing electoral system has been costlier and ostentatious, adding that a fully proportional electoral system is a better option to reduce unnecessary poll expenditures.

The party has pressed for enforcing the fully proportional electoral system based on gender, ethnic, region and geographical population.

On the occasion, party Chair Hari Charan Shah viewed that it was essential to switch to a proportional electoral system to ensure proportional representation of all classes, castes and communities in the policy-making level.

He also insisted on the need for political stability to move the country towards peace and prosperity.

The party’s Federal Council chair Anup Pahadi, vice-chair Raghu Pariyar and Yam Bahadur GC, deputy general secretary Suma Bastola claimed the Janata Dal has been struggling to establish itself as an alternative political force for the past 28 years, represents all regions and classes on the basis of population.
