Abroad going Nepali students took foreign currency worth Rs 51 billion: Surendra Pandey

'Nepal should seek the return'

KATHMANDU: Former Finance Minister Surendra Pandey has said that the abroad going Nepali students have been abusing foreign reserves as they took Rs 51 billion  to go abroad in 10 months period.

Speaking at the Finance Committee of the federal parliament on Monday, CPN-UML leader Pandey opined that the nation should think about the return it should claim for the large sum that has been used to send the students for study abroad.

“We have let the foreign currency flow outwards in the name of acquiring foreign degrees,” he said, asking, “Can such a large amount be recovered  in the form of remittances.”

Citing the case of Australia, he said that it is high time for Nepal to consider what it should seek in return from the countries which have been getting a large sum in the name of visa charges and education fees.
